I've been busy attending conferences in June and learning some new pieces! I was attending the AMTA State Conference in Huntsville May 30-June 1. I attended my first Matthay national conference in June (19th-22nd). It was held in Tuscaloosa, AL at the University of AL. I was in the midst of "greatness" in the piano world. Many of the people who attended are world famous teachers and concert artists. Tobias Matthay opened his school of Pianoforte Playing in London in 1895. He attracted students from all over the world. Later his students founded the American Matthay Association to promote his teaching principles. In the beginning he chose the members of this society and since his death members must be those who had actually worked with him or those pianists who have studied with a member of this group. I was a "guest" of the association since I was invited to attend the conference as an active teacher of piano in Alabama. Several Alabama teachers did attend some if not all of the conference. This is the first time it has been in the south.

Lessons began again 1 July.

Congratulations to Lindsey for attending the Young Musicians Camp at the University of Montevallo. She performed as a recitalist, a chamber music pianist, and was a duet partner to another student from another studio.

    2018-2019 Studio Summary

Three students entered the Omega Psi Phi Audition in August, 2017 and two advanced to the next level. All three received awards: 2nd place, 3rd place and Honorable Mention. They received monetary prizes and two advanced to the next level. That was held in Montgomery and one student received 1st place and did compete again in March 2019.

One student entered the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra’s Young Artist Concerto Competition in October. She advanced to the finals and was selected as the 3rd place winner. All finalists received a monetary award.

The HMTA sponsored a Christmas Palooza in December at the Huntsville Public Library. Eleven students participated in this event which was open to the public and all library patrons.

In December eight students performed in a solo recital at Redstone Village. The resident who donated her beautiful grand piano to the Village also performed for everyone!

My studio’s Spring Recitals were held at the Huntsville Museum of Art’s Great Hall in April. All students participated in one of the three recitals. Four seniors were honored and none will major in music. They will not be forgotten and will be missed!

The Huntsville Music Study Club hosted their annual Scholarship Audition and 1 student from this studio was selected as a winner and performed for the May meeting. All received monetary prizes!

One student was asked to perform in a master class with Dr. Jihye Chang Sung. This was sponsored by the music department of UAH.

Twenty-one students entered the AMTA District Piano Audition held in April. Eighteen made the top grade in both performance and theory. Most advanced to the State Audition in May. At the State audition the judges were out-of-state college piano faculty. One winner was selected in Div. I, ages 10-11. Two winners were selected in Division II, ages 12-14. One winner was selected in Division III, ages 15 – 18. Five students were chosen as Honorable Mention Winners, and five students received the grade of Outstanding. The Winners performed at the AMTA State Conference at UAH May 30-June 1. Three students performed on the Winners Circle Recital, which is for students who have won previously in their respective divisions.

One student attended the University of Montevallo’s Young Musicians’ camp in June. She performed three times in the final concert: solo piano, a Chamber Music Trio and Piano Duet.

I attended the AMTA State Conference at UAH in Huntsville May 30-June 1. I also attended the National Matthey Conference at the Univ. of AL in Tuscaloosa in June.

Several students play the piano for church services regularly. Other students have been asked to fill in as substitute pianists or accompanists when needed. I am delighted that they can do this easily! Congratulations to all students and parents for another good year of piano lessons.
